The story's inspiration is a combination of personal accounts of life in a small mountain village in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. It is also a literary reflection of the central character Suhail’s beautiful autistic brain. Suhail’s innate ability to navigate the ravines and tracks in the mountains of Fujairah lead to the development of the central character in the story. 'The Boy who knew the Mountains' expresses the capacity of individuals on the autism spectrum to empathise with others and feel the overwhelming power of emotional responses.
